Lubricating Your Parking Brake

*EASY*

You should inspect and lubricate your parking brake system annually. For convenience, perform this maintenance procedure with your chassis lubrication. Use the following procedure:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground with the engine OFF, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in PARK (for automatic) or REVERSE (for manual). If the ground clearance underneath the vehicle is insufficient, elevate the rear end on safety stands. Block the front wheels.
  2. While underneath the car, use the owner's manual to identify the appropriate friction points requiring lubrication. These points are usually the linkage directly below the console, the equalizer (U-shaped bracket), and any cable connections. Use the grease or appropriate substitute recommended by the car manufacturer. Apply the grease first with the parking brake engaged.
  3. Repeat the lubrication process with the parking brake disengaged.
  4. Remove the safety stands if used.
